Faction Starter Packs
So you've got yourself one of our faction starter packs? This is the ultimate guide for what comes with each pack and how to use each one.

These packs, made in collaboration with Moonhopper Games, are a fun and simple starter set to get into Tiny Conflict: 3012. These packs come in two variations, each a representation of a faction from the Tiny Conflict universe. The first pack is the UGNN pack. This pack represents the industrious people of Earth in the year 3012!

After an intense civil war between it's closest ally, Mars, Earth and its navy have only become more determined to grow bigger and stronger. The UGNN, the Earth space navy, uses powerful and gigantic 3d printers to create everything from its ships to it's equipment. This mass resource printing led to a boom in production of ships and equipment for soldiers allowing the UGNN to create massive spaceborne fleets. However, the greatest downfall in their fleet design comes from the limitations of the printers themselves. Their still somewhat simple nature means that their ships take quite a bulky and blocky form. This makes them less efficient, but also much larger and easier targets for attacking vessels. The printers are also limited to the resources they can use, and print ships in much lower quality metals for faster, cheaper prints. This opens them up to much higher wear and tear as well as being easier to take out. However, what the fleets of the UGNN lack in quality they more than make up for in quantity.

In your UGNN Faction Starter Pack you will find 3 things. If you picked up your faction starter set from an in person event, you may also have been given a bonus promo sprue pack to use with the set! Find the build guide for the sprue packs in our other resources. You'll find 2 paints, one green and one white, as well as a dice tracker arrow. Using the paint guide below, you'll be able to paint up any models you make in UGNN colours.
Paint Guide - UGNN
This extremely simple paint guide gives you an easy-to-do base for painting your UGNN fleets and takes barely any time at all!
First step is to of course get your model! Build guides for building ships from the Tiny Conflict universe are available in other resources, or you can make your own designs!

Next, make sure to prime your models with anywhere from a mid-grey to black primer. These can be found in any hobby stores for a fairly low price. Any similar undercoat paint will also work fine. This step is especially useful when using Department of Wargaming models as this hides some of the potential lines that come from 3d printing.

Also note that the darker a primer/undercoat you use, the darker the end result of the model.

After this first coat has dried, open up the green that came in the pack, and make sure to wet your brush to thin down the paint that you pick up on the brush.

Paint the entire model in the green, ensure that the coat is even and thin. Drag out any thick pools of paint to thin it out across the model. Let this first layer dry before carrying on. This is a good time, if you are painting multiple models at the same time, to do the same process to a different model.
Once the first coat has dried, carry out the same process again over the top of the first coat. Continue to ensure that the coat is as smooth and uniform as possible and to remove any thick pools of paint. Once dried again, this should give you a nice even coat across the model.

Now that your model is all green, now comes the fun part. Details! With the UGNN being such a large navy that spans across many parts of the galaxy, all of the markings on their ships are largely different. Fleet markings mostly consist of different vertical white stripes in various amounts. This part is open to you're creative freedom and allows you to put your own touch on the models whilst still keeping them lore accurate!

All that's left to do now is paint up the stem and the base. If you hadn't already, paint these over in black (or the same undercoat/primer colour you used), and then paint all the notches, except the triangle one, white. Finally, paint the triangle notch a distinctive colour. We usually use red, but if you don't have one, using the green you used for the ship also works!

And that's it, a simple but complete guide on painting up your ship! From this base, you can add a number of unique paint effects to achieve a number of different styles on your ship. Want your ship to look worn? Paint silver along its edge and sponge on some too to make the paint look old. Add rust on top to make the ship look like it's ready for the scrap yard. If you've got a super precise brush and a keen eye for detail, try adding on some little yellow dots as windows across the ship. There are loads of options, but this is a great start for now!
The second pack we have on offer is the MRN pack. This pack represents the small but technologically advanced sibling to Earth, the people of Mars!

Earth and Mars have a long drawn out rivalry that goes deeper than any surviving generation can remember. What was once a distant dream in the eyes of astronauts across Earth, is now their most fierce and closest enemy. Mars was once recognised as a colony of Earth and even had a political delegate on the UGN council. However, Earth only ever saw it as a lucrative mining opportunity and an easier way to build star ships as the gravity meant it was easier to launch them. In 2996, the combined powers of the Earth and Mars shipyards were meant to be about to complete the final work on a series of expedition ships that would grow Earth by creating new colonies across the stars. However, this was not the case. Late in the year a resistance group formed of disgruntled Martian people, opposition members to the UGN and a Martian delegate that was "too radical" to be Mars' delegate to the UGN stormed the UGN building on Mars. They killed guards and took the current UGN delegate hostage. The coup had succeeded and Mars was under their control. They revealed that the expedition ships they were meant to be working on were actually made into naval vessels of their own design. Their one demand for the release of their hostage was that Mars be declared independent and be officially recognised. Earth quickly jumped into action and retrofitted their expedition ships for war! In early 2997 the UGN navy or UGNN was officially formed but instead of attacking Mars, they did far worse. They set up a blockade around the planet and prevented any resource ships entering the planet. Soon Mars became desperate, the planet and its people were starving and they had no choice but to go to war. In mid 2997, Mars officially declared itself the independent Martian Republic after a vote was held on the planet and formed the Martian Republic Navy the very next day. That same day, they declared war on Earth and intense battles between them and the UGNN broke out.
Except for a small break between 2998 and 3010, Earth and Mars have been at war ever since. With having a much smaller planet and population, they cannot rely on man power to win. Instead Mars puts massive amounts of funding into R&D for their navy and produces some of the most cutting edge and sleek ships at war in 3012. Technologies such as stealth coatings and experimental alien weapons makes them stand out from others in battle. They are renowned galaxy wide, for their military prowess and tactics that allow them to go toe-to-toe with some of the largest navies in the galaxy!

In your MRN Faction Starter Pack you will find 3 things. If you picked up your faction starter set from an in person event, you may also have been given a bonus promo sprue pack to use with the set! Find the build guide for the sprue packs in our other resources. You'll find 2 paints, one orange and one dark grey, as well as a dice tracker arrow. Using the paint guide below, you'll be able to paint up any models you make in MRN colours.
Paint Guide - MRN
For this paint guide, the steps are extremely similar to the UGNN one, the biggest difference is the colours being used. For everywhere that would use green on a UGNN ship, use orange for an MRN ship. Orange is the primary colour for the MRN, whilst they do have some different reversed variants, orange is the main colour you'll see in their fleets.

Once again prime or undercoat your model in a mid-grey to black paint to make sure you have a smooth surface to work from. Then paint two thin layers of orange across the body of the model, making sure it's as even as possible.

Once the orange has dried properly, next comes detailing. Similarly to the UGNN paint scheme, there is a lot you can do to be creative here. As there are lots of different markings from across the galaxy, you can decide your own patterns if you'd like. Using the dark grey, paint a number of vertical stripes across the main hull and between 1 and 3 vertical stripes on the main panel of the right thruster. On the main panel of the left thruster, if you're feeling brave, paint a number on the side to be the ID number for the ship!

Finish off the model in the same way as before with a dark paint for the stem and base, white (or dark grey if only using this set) for the notches and a distinct colour like red (or the orange) for the triangle notch.

Now your model is finished!
Playing The game
Now you have painted models, it's time to get them on the table to play games with! Start by getting yourself a copy of the rules. You can get a physical copy of the rules here! Or download a digital copy of the rules for free from the store. The rule book is set out in a way that is easy to learn and is sectioned so that you don't get over faced with too much too quickly.

Now that you have the rules, you will be able use the dice trays that came with the starter pack. Each tray is a good way of containing the dice of larger ships to keep track of their health and crew. The trays are much easier to move around and keep track of using the arrow than having to move the dice with the model each time!

And that's it! The full guide on using your starter set! Each kit is a great tool for starting Tiny Conflict: 3012 and gives you a great basis to build your fleets from and slowly play bigger and bigger games! Show us your creations! Post pictures of you making models and using your starter pack and make sure to tag @department_of_wargaming on Instagram and use #tinyconflict3012!
